You’ve waited all year for your vacation, that chance to visit with family and friends, or maybe just escape to someplace exotic. But as a responsible pet owner, you need to consider what to do with your pet.
If you decide to use a kennel, find out their normal business hours and drop by un-announced for a tour (Be polite and do not do this in the first hour or last hour they are open). If they will not let you examine the entire facility without an appointment, do not leave yourdog. Find out if any of the employees are certified by the American Boarding Kennel Association as pet care technicians or by the Red Cross in Pet First Aid (this is rare) or are there any actual Veterinary Technicians. Check to see what kind of food they will be feeding your pet. Make sure it’s up to your standards. Are the sanitation practices up to par? Is there suitable room for your pet to move/play around in? If you are not 100% comfortable leaving your pet (if you get that nagging feeling in your gut) don’t leave your pet there! If you feel good about the place. Great! One of the things I do is take a tee-shirt or towel that has my scent on it, and if I’m going to be gone a long time take I take a few items.
If you use a sitting service and they don’t have an office, be sure to meet with the person that you are considering to care for your pets. Always Check references. Divulge any information that is useful such as the type of pets you have and how many. Make sure to furnish your vet’s information and/or what the sitter should do in case of an emergency. The good thing about using a sitting service is your pet’s surrounded by familiar sights, smells and sounds. It eliminates the trauma of travel or an unfamiliar environment. Most importantly, it ensures good health (no exposure to other animals’ illness or parasites). And oh what a good feeling of not having to impose on family and friends.
A well behaved dog is welcome in many places. If your dog is polite and mild mannered, you might want to take him along. Just be sure that the place you’re going to is pet-friendly and that includes a relative’s home. You have to show responsibility as a guest by cleaning up after your dog and not leaving him alone to bark or destroy a room. Especially in someone else’s home.
While cats can travel, that’s not usually the choice for the majority of felines. The best and safest way, is to have somebody that you trust take care of your pet, whether that’s a pet-sitter, a relative or a neighbor.
Vacation should be fun and worry-free. Hopefully this post will help to ensure that it is, and that your pet is comfortable all the while.
