Retiring on a Cruise Ship? Seems to be very popular!
Published Friday, December 28th 2012
How does life aboard a cruise ship compare with the routines in a senior apartment house or in a nursing home? The food is better. There is professional entertainment. Your shipmates change every week, and you meet people of all backgrounds. During the day, if you stay aboard the ship, you can attend classes. If you leave the ship on arrival at a Caribbean port, you can enjoy a stroll in exotic surroundings before reboarding. A ship’s doctor and a small clinic/hospital are available. A ship’s newspaper is free each morning. Multiple lounges and deck chairs are there for relaxation; a small library offers free books to read.
There are options popping up where you can actually buy your spot on a cruise ship as you would a condo. For the price of a regular condo, you can retire on a cruise ship instead of an independent living facility. Some ships offer the option to rent your cruise ship unit. Until you are ready to take on the thrills of living on a cruise ship full time. All your cruise expenses are covered except for cocktails, spa fees, casino charges and whatever you purchase at the gift shop. Just like if it was a regular cruise except you don’t have to go back home. Home is on the ship. There are no condo fees or property taxes. You pay for what you use.

Healthcare coverage is additional, but there is a complete hospital onboard to look after any medical or health care concerns wherever we travel.
Is this type of lifestyle for everyone? The staterooms are compact, and although they may contain a microwave and/or small refrigerator, they will not have an oven or stove. So, if preparing your own meals is a passion, and you need lots of space in your residence, this won’t be the place for you. But, if you’d be happy to eat almost every meal out, are looking for a ready-made social group (the set-up would be ideal for singles), and like the idea of living on the water at an affordable price with a wonderful climate and amenities close by, and not leaving home while you do some traveling than this may be the option for you. What better way to pay tribute to a lifetime of hard work than being pampered onboard a cruise ship?
I think it’s marvelous; and now I see that it’s no secret and many seniors are doing it, or contemplating it. Nursing homes, independent living, etc. are certainly very depressing, and the “waiting room for heaven” (or the other place). How great to meet new people all the time, socialize, have wonderful meals prepared 3 times a day or more. No cleaning duties, different ports of call every day, a way to exercise, walking around boat everyday…activities….wow!! Especially great for a senior that is independent; takes care of all his basic health functions.
While doing my research on this topic I was shocked to find that single women and Bachelors also take advantage of this type of living. Something to think about!
