Vacationing and traveling are all about fun and new experiences but you must also take your safety into consideration. You can get into a lot of trouble while traveling to unfamiliar places. Below are a few important tips for safe travel. Dont be a victim!
- Plan before you go. Be sure that you research your destination and familiarize yourself with local laws and news.
- Don’t carry large amounts of money. A safer alternative is a traveler’s check. They are just as good as cash but are protected against theft and loss.
- If you must carry money wear a concealed money belt and try not to handle your money in plain sight.
- Do not carry valuable items such as purses, jewelry, or wallets. If is something that you would hate to lose leave it home if you can.
- Try to look as if you belong. Do not attempt to stand out. Doing so may attract local scam artists or kidnappers.
- Try not to look at maps is open areas. You will be immediately identified as a tourist.
- Pay attention to your surroundings and always act as if you are under surveillance.
- Watch for pickpockets. Be wary of anyone who bumps or tries to distract you in any way.
- Wherever your destination may be, be sure to carry all documents required for travel.
- Be sure to inform your travel companions of your plans. Try not to wander off alone. There is safety in numbers.
- When you reach your destination, don’t take shortcuts. Stay in well-lit and well-traveled areas.
- Keep a copy of all credit card numbers and other important documents in a safe in your hotel room. This way you are able to immediately report a theft and put a freeze on your cards.
- Try to withdraw money from ATMs only during the daytime.
- Lock valuables in the trunk when you’re away from your car.
